ZetaTemper

A training log that runs the program you were given, and hands back what you actually did.

Competing in a powerlifting meet, under the bar at the top of a squat.
Under the bar, where a log has to earn its keep

Who made this

Ernest Benjamin Hauck. I am not a strength coach and I hold no coaching certification. A coach who builds a training app has every reason to put their own method inside it, and I have none to put there. This one asks for your program instead of handing you mine.

I have been an athlete my whole life. Cross country and track in Louisiana: the 5K on the country, and on the track the 800, the 1600, the 3200 and anchoring the 4x4 at every meet. The same in college, with the 10K on top, and the training had to cover all of it at once. That teaches you to show up on the days you would rather not, and that is the part that stayed.

I have not missed a lift since 2010. Sixteen years, through a move to Tennessee, a marriage, and ten years as a Special Warfare Operator. I started as a 135 pound distance runner and I am a 200 pound powerlifter now, which is most of the reason this app does not assume one kind of training. I have been the runner and I have been the lifter, and neither one logs the same way.

How it works

The coach writes the program in a spreadsheet, the way they already work. Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, anything that saves a tab-separated file. The athlete imports it and the app runs it.

One row per exercise. Blocks, days and weeks are columns, not a structure you have to rebuild inside somebody's app. Nothing is numbered and nothing has to be entered twice.

What comes back is a file the athlete exports and the coach opens — what was actually lifted, against what was written.

What it does not do

Where your data lives

On the device it runs on. A file leaves that device only when the person using the app exports one and chooses where to send it. Zeta Systems does not receive, store, or process that data — there is no server for it to reach.

How it is built

I built all of it. The language it is written in, the compiler that builds it, the app itself and the guide it hands to your coaches. No third-party code, no server, no account.

Before you train

ZetaTemper logs training. It does not prescribe it. Responsibility for a program rests with whoever wrote it, and responsibility for training rests with the person doing it — whether they wrote it themselves, bought it, or were handed it by a coach.

Resistance training and conditioning carry a risk of injury. Anyone who trains does so at their own risk and should consult a qualified physician before beginning.

Where it runs

ZetaTemper runs on Android today. An iPhone version is coming.

Who licenses it

ZetaTemper is licensed to gyms, not to individuals.

A gym licenses it for its coaching staff. Each coach writes programs in a spreadsheet the way they already work, and the athletes they program for run the app. One agreement covers the staff and the people they train.

The gym holds the license. The programs stay the coach's — spreadsheets, in a format any spreadsheet opens, that leave with whoever wrote them.

Getting it

Available directly, not through an app store. If you run a gym, or you coach at one and think your athletes should be logging against what you actually wrote, write and say so.
